Reflexology is the science that deals with the principle that there are areas on the feet which correspond to the glands, organs and parts of the body. Reflexology is a unique method of using the thumb and forefingers on these reflex areas. The average foot takes around 8000 steps every day - reward your feet.
Reflexology Improves Circulation
Blood carries vital nutrients through the body, it also carries away toxins and waste products. One of the symptoms of a stressful life is a decrease in blood circulation. An improvement in circulation will allow the body to receive nutrients carried in blood and also eliminate waste more effectively.
Reflexology Can Aid in Detoxification
Other than the circulatory system, the body has other methods for removing waste products such as the lymphatic system and digestive system. A stressful situation will cause these systems to operate below par. Reflexology has the effect of increasing flow and movement of these systems. One of the ways it does this is by decreasing the levels of stress held by the body.
The Theories Behind Reflexology
Several theories of how reflexology works are offered –
The Energy Hypothesis: The vital energy of life force that circulates throughout the body is sometimes blocked. Reflexology helps the energy to recirculate.
The Lactic Hypothesis: Deposits of lactic acid microcrystals that disturb the energy flow are crushed through reflexology work, allowing the energy to recirculate again.
The Relaxing Effect Hypothesis: Many physical problems have to do with persistent tension and stress. Reflexology is relaxing and may reduce stress levels.
The Psychological Hypothesis: Reflexology techniques allow care and concern to be shown. The Hypothesis of
Propreoceptive Nervous Receptors: That the pressure sensors of the foot stimulate responses within the autonomic nervous system and the sensory/motor nervous system, as in a 'wireless' acupuncture system.
How Is It Done?
The patient is asked to either sit on a comfortable couch or lie face up on a treatment table with both feet uncovered.
The reflexologist then gently feels over them to locate the sites of 'crystalline' and 'gritty' substances under the skin. These can correspond to organs, systems and body parts that are affected by disease.
Treatment consists of pressure applied with the edge of the thumb or finger, rotated clockwise. Pressure is usually quite deep, but need not be painful.
Each session lasts 45-60 minutes.
