More about Cacao Yoga…
Cacao Yoga allows you to experience the medicinal properties of ceremonial grade cacao moving through your body in a specially designed hatha yoga practice. The ceremony involves Pranayama breathing, Asanas, Sound Healing, Relaxation, Meditation and Reiki. These elements are brought into union with the magic of cacao so you can experience a deep connection to your body and soul.
Cacao is unlike other plant medicines in that it doesn’t take you on a journey, but gently supports you in wherever you’re at. Cacao is a subtle energy that works with you based on what’s happening inside. If you’re in a “get things done” mood, it will enhance that. If you’re in a creative mood, it will enhance that. If your focus is on slowing down and letting the minds volume turn down, it will support that. If there are deeper feelings that need to move, it will support that too. That’s the beauty and magic of cacao – it’s versatility and non-directiveness. It will show you the door, but walking through it is up to you.
People generally describe cacao as a heart-centered energy because it significantly increases blood flow and generates an expansive feeling often centered around the heart. Intimacy and connectedness is easier, love seems to flow naturally. Focus is easier and almost effortless. A gentle glow and vibrating energy often emerges and it’s up to you where you take it.
About the Yoga Class
The first thing in a Cacao Yoga class is what is called a “Chocolate Drinking Ceremony”. During this blessing we give thanks to the Cacao Spirit and we call for this spirit to bless us and our practice, we then drink the Cacao intentionally, in a delicious gluten free, dairy free and sugar free hot Chocolate form.
We then begin to experience how the cacao moves throughout the body. You will be guided through a heart opening Hatha Yoga practice that is both gentle and slightly challenging and suitable for everyone whatever their yogi ability.
Hatha Yoga is more than just a physical practice, it is a transformational journey. Hatha is translated as ha meaning “sun” and tha meaning “moon”. This refers to the balance of masculine aspects—active, hot, sun—and feminine aspects—receptive, cool, moon—within all of us. Hatha Yoga is a path toward creating balance and uniting opposites (Yin/Yang, Shiva/Shakti). Hatha Yoga shows us how to balance our effort and surrender in each posture, it asks us to bring our attention to our breath, which helps us to still the fluctuations of the mind and be more present in each moment. The sequence of Hatha Yoga exercises (known as asanas or postures) is designed to balance strength and flexibility, and it also aligns our skin, muscles, and bones. The postures are also designed to open the many channels of the body creating a smooth flow of energy, especially throughout the spine and the main seven chakras. We begin with the more masculine part of the practice creating a gentle heat before we transition into the more relaxed, reclined and female postures preparing our body, mind and spirit for meditation.
During the meditation Kate will share Reiki with all those open to receive this loving, nurturing and profound energy. By the end of the ceremony you’ll likely feel blissful, in tune and ready to experience the rest of your day with a sprinkle of magic! I encourage you to then go home and write or journal, or work on whatever creative project you may have going on… or simply go and be with your loved ones… spreading the love.
Why is cacao yoga so good for you?
Cacao is a superfood.
– It is one of the highest sources of antioxidants; with far greater antioxidants than red wine or green tea.
– It is super rich in magnesium, so it helps all the muscles of the body relax, this is ideal for the practice of yoga!
– It increases the neurotransmitter activity in the brain to increase clarity of mind, focus and attention; great for meditation practice!
– Strengthens and builds the health of the heart. As a vasodilator, it’s great for anyone suffering from High Blood pressure, as it lowers BP.
– Detoxifies the liver (and kidneys) and generally cleanses the body.
– It’s a natural Anti-depressant; with the extra release of serotonin and dopamine it is a mood lifter, which is what gives us the euphoric, blissful experience.
– And if that’s not enough, unlike regular chocolate (which is filled with sugar and dairy) Cacao is great for weight loss.
But we’re not talking about your average block of chocolate from the supermarket – that just won’t cut it, nor will regular cacao powder found in health food stores. These products are refined/processed and the medicinal properties are removed. We are talking about pure Ceremonial Grade Cacao, which is chocolate in its purest form; ground from the beans, with the cacao butter intact.
To the Ancient Mayans Cacao was believed to be “the food of the Gods” which not only opened the door of the heart, but also the door to greater consciousness. So ultimately, we are using the chocolate for its spiritual qualities. As a powerful heart opener we use the cacao to connect us to the spiritual essence of yoga – which is union. Yoga means union. For us, that is union between the physical and spiritual; the body and the soul. We use the cacao simply as a way to open the body & mind and to connect with the soul.
Cacao – Possible contraindications?
Think of cacao as a plant medicine. Like any medicine, it is important to be mindful in its use.
In most cases, there are no concerns to be aware of. There is a list below and these are usually only a concern in higher doses, like when we use the ceremonial dose. In these cases, the combination of potent cacao and a higher amount warrants some additional mindfulness.
The recommended ceremonial dose is 2 ozs.
The recommended dose for yoga is 1 oz and this is the dose we use.
Cacao is a strong bitter and power detoxifier as it helps cleanse the liver. Because of this, in higher doses people might experience detox symptoms such as headache or nausea. In this case, take it as a blessing and drink plenty of water as your body lets go of whatever it didn’t like. This will likely be accentuated for people on a raw diet or who are fasting.
Many anti-depressants are contra-indicated with the tryptophan and MAO inhibitors in this cacao, so we recommend checking your medications first. Regular Chocolate doesn’t have enough strength to cause these effects. Worst case scenario is headache and nausea, but avoid the hassle and check up first.
Serious heart conditions. The theobromine in cacao increases heart rate significantly and is a vasodilator, lowering blood pressure. If you have such a condition it’s best to check with your doctor first.
During Pregnancy & breastfeeding it is important to reduce intake of stimulating foods, in the same way you would reduce tea or coffee. The theobromine in cacao, which is very similar to caffeine, has a stimulating effect. Thus we recommend the lower dosages (e.g. maximum of 1oz).
If you have ANY allergies or concerns please let me know.
About Kate Alderman
Kate has been walking the path of transformation and healing for 8 years. She shares her energy through Yoga, Reiki, Colour Therapy, Sound Healing, Personal Training, and Nutrition and Lifestyle Coaching.
Kate has an intuitive ability to connect to and interact with the human energy field or aura, enabling her to facilitate transformation in others. The aura is the universal vehicle through which we create our experience of reality. It is through this energy field that we have the power to heal ourselves.
By sharing guidance with sound, movement, colour and reiki touch Kate is able to facilitate profound transformations in consciousness, resulting in shifts within the physical reality of a person.
Kate began to develop her natural healing ability after a near death experience at the age of 29. She continued her work as a Personal Trainer, Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach soon realising the power of the work being channeled through her. Her practice offers an exploration of the mind, body and spirit connection and potent healing support beyond the limitations of human knowledge. Kate is a channel, or ‘medium’, whereby she connects and receives information from the collective grid of consciousness.Kate’s energy carries the frequencies of Amazonian medicinal plants. In her path to self transformation she has experienced some deep and very profound journeys in the Amazon with the Shipibo women and men.
Kate enjoys sharing her wisdom and observations. She believes that she is a facilitator rather than a healer. She facilitates and provide the tools and the person heals themselves. Her passion is to empower the inner healer by addressing the treatment of self and others to raise the consciousness and vibration of the planet and fulfil the greater wish of peace on Earth.
